I felt I was there, in Leningrad, with Anna, living the life she lived during the siege. A story with hope and despair finely balanced. Very realistic and at times difficult to remember it is a novel.

It's dark. The packed barn smells of women. Flesh, sweat, blood, dirty clothes, swollen feet. The heavy smell of work sweat, and the sharper, acrid stink of fear.
The bread supply didn't arrive this evening. Four trucks shelled yesterday someone said.
