The Floating Island by Anna Ralph

The Floating Island

Anna Ralph

A satisfyingly complicated novel about complex people: 15-year-old Matt in a wheelchair since the accident that killed his brother, 18 year-old Sarah his forthright carer who's certainly not as simple as she first seems and Doc, the psychiatrist who has more problems than his patients. The narrative demands concentration but is well worth the effort. Recommended too for its humour and for Sarah - if only there were more like her around.

I got a letter from him, too. A long one. Now that was a surprise. It's full of encouragement ... and common sense and a whole load of waffle about feelings - bog-typical Doc. Reading between the lines I can tell he thinks he fucked up. I don't think he did. All he did was fall for Sarah - and anybody can do that.
